Targets

What were the main targets of Cycling City York?

We aimed to:

  • Increase the levels of cycling overall by 25 per cent by 2011
  • Increase the number of children cycling to school by 100 per cent
  • Increase the number of journeys that people make to work by bike by 10 per cent

How were we going to achieve that?

We:

  • Filled gaps in the cycle route network and provided more new routes
  • Improved the quality and availability of cycle parking
  • Provided cycling information, training and support to people of all ages and abilities
  • and raised greater awareness of the benefits of cycling and provided more opportunities for you to give it a try.

What has been achieved?

Following completion of the project in March 2011, our early indications show that overall levels of cycling in York have risen to around 15 per cent. This represents a significant 50 per cent increase in cycling in real terms since the beginning of the Cycling City York programme. Starting from a 10 per cent baseline figure, our original programme target was 12.5 per cent.

Commuting by bike in York has also seen a similar growth. Surveys from leading employers in York show that, in certain workplaces, levels of cycling are even higher than 15 per cent, with some reporting figures of between 17-35 per cent of staff cycling to work.

What has been rather more inconclusive in these early indications are the figures on levels of children cycling to school. Annual school surveys (undertaken each January) show a plateau in cycling at this time of year, whilst bike shed counts undertaken periodically throughout the programme showed consistently high levels of cycling. Further work is being done with schools to get a much more accurate picture of cycling to school.

Final figures on the results of the Cycling Towns and Cities programme is expected to be published later this year/early next year in a report by Cycling England/Department for Transport.

Beyond the Cycling City programme, York will continue to build upon what has been accomplished and continue the momentum of our work as far as possible.

We are currently awaiting the outcome of York's bid for a share of the Department for Transport's Local Sustainable Travel Fund (LSTF). If successful, then we are confident that further cycling measures and programmes will form part of the delivery of this programme over it's four-year period.
