What you need
There’s a vast range of cycling clothing and accessories on the market, and if you’re just starting out there is no point in spending a fortune. However, there are a few essential items that you will need straight away for a safe, secure and enjoyable ride.
Storage
Whether you’re looking for something that will enable you to carry your shopping home or you need to take paperwork and other items into work with you, there are a variety of different storage options to choose from when travelling by bicycle. From baskets and saddle bags to backpacks and panniers, visit a local cycle retailer to look at the options and see what will work best for you.
Locks
Don't skimp on the cost of buying locks - they're often the only thing stopping your valuable bike from being stolen!
There is a wide range of locks available and, generally speaking, you should reckon on spending at least £20 on a lock. Ask your local cycle retailer about Silver or Gold standard locks. These offer the best protection. The police also recommend you use two different types of locks to secure your bike if possible, such as a cable lock and a D-lock, as thieves are rarely equipped to break into both.
Lights
It’s important for cyclists to ensure that they can be seen clearly by other road users at all times. The Highway Code states that, at night, cyclists must have white front and red rear lights lit. Bikes must also be fitted with a red rear reflector (and amber pedal reflectors, if manufactured after 1 October 1985). White front reflectors and spoke reflectors will also help cyclists to be seen. Flashing lights are permitted, but it is recommended that cyclists who are riding in areas without street lighting use a steady front lamp.
If you’re going to be cycling after dark, you should:
- ensure that your lights and reflectors work and are kept clean;
- wear light coloured clothing;
- invest in some high visibility clothing or reflective ‘slapwraps’, if possible.

Check out the Weather panel on this page for details of sunrise and sunset times to know when to use your lights.
