New routes
As well as providing people of all ages and abilities with more opportunities to cycle, we’re also improving and developing more cycle routes for you to use and more places to park your bike. The aim is to make York’s road network safer and more appealing for cyclists.
Many of the improvements made using Cycling City York funding have been carried out in direct response to feedback from residents who responded to our survey early in 2009. They are also in keeping with City of York Council’s wider transport strategy, which aims to give cyclists and pedestrians greater priority on York’s roads.
The top three improvements that you asked for were:
- More dedicated cycle tracks away from the road
- Improved safety for cyclists at busy junctions
- More cycle lanes on the roads
Here are just some of the improvements that we’ve delivered to date, or are currently working on:
Blossom Street
Work on the Blossom Street junction is now complete. The proposals implemented were as a result of a detailed consultation with residents on a range of proposed improvements to make this area safer for all road users, particularly cyclists and pedestrians.
New cycle feeder lanes have been created to enable cyclists to get to the front of queuing or slow moving traffic on this busy route.
In a UK first, an advanced green light for cyclists is also being trialled outbound from Queen Street to give them a five second head start on the rest of the traffic.
Beckfield Lane
An off-road cycle route has been provided along the northern section of Beckfield Lane, ensuring that pupils of the new Manor CE School and those at Carr Infants and Carr Junior have a safe cycle route to and from school.
Clifton Bridge
A new cycle route has been provided across Clifton Bridge. It starts at the Salisbury Road and Water End junction, and acts as an important link between existing cycles routes on both sides of the bridge. The route is entirely off-road in one direction from Acomb to Clifton and uses on-road cycle lanes for the reverse route Clifton to Acomb. The footpath on one side of Clifton Bridge has been redesignated as a cycle lane, and the other restricted to pedestrians, to ensure that both cyclists and pedestrians can cross the bridge safely. The Clifton Bridge route forms an important part of York's planned Orbital route to provide fast, safe and convenient cycle routes for commuters and those cycling to school.
Crichton Avenue
A gap in the circular cycle route around York has been plugged following the completion of a major improvement scheme on Crichton Avenue, which was funded by Cycling City York and City of York Council’s local transport budget. The work was carried out in response to feedback from residents who felt that there was a need for a circular route all the way around the city that would enable cyclists to avoid busy roads.
The road on Crichton Avenue has been completely resurfaced and there have been improvements to street lighting, the roundabout and the crossing, as well as the creation of 1.5 metre-wide cycle lanes. There are also shared used areas to enable cyclists and pedestrians to cross the bridge as it was recognised that the road is too narrow at that point to allow cyclists and motorists to share the same road space safely.
Fulford Road
New cycling facilities have been provided along the length of Fulford Road, along with other improvements for pedestrians and public transport users. The work has been carried out in several phases to minimise disruption to residents.
Moor Lane railway bridge
This new cycle route over the Moor Lane railway bridge enables cyclists to get from the Askham Bar mini roundabout to the mini roundabout at Chaloners Road. The route connects with the existing cycle routes along Tadcaster Road and provides improved access to York College, Tesco and Askham Bar Park & Ride site.
Orbital route
Wigginton Road and Crichton Avenue are just two areas where we have worked to try to plug gaps in the orbital cycle route around the city. The orbital route, coming to completion, provides a safe, continuous route for cyclists around the city.
Wigginton Road
We’ve recently consulted residents on proposals to introduce a mixture of on and off-road cycling lanes on Wigginton Road outside York Hospital. The proposed improvements are intended to fill gaps in the cycle route from Haxby to York Railway Station, between the Foss Islands cycle route and Bridge Lane.
York Railway Station
In partnership with East Coast Main Line, Cycling City York is making a number of improvements aimed at making York Railway Station more easily accessible to cyclists. This involves work to create access points for cyclists at Lowther Terrace and up from Post Office Lane, near the sorting office, into the short stay car park, which is due to be completed later this summer.
