New Cycle to Work factsheets for employers

A series of FREE factsheets on Cycling to Work, aimed at employers, is out now. The factsheets outline the many financial - as well as environmental - benefits for business by increasing the levels of cycling to work. They also provide a wealth of advice on how employers can encourage cycling, both for the commute to work and for business-related travel.
Cutting levels of sickness absence as a result of a more active workforce is just one of several significant cost savings to be realised by getting more staff on their bikes. Using bikes for work-related travel rather than using pool cars or taxis can also represent significant savings, from increasing productivity through less time wasted on travel as a result of congestion, to giving over valuable land from car parking functions to other uses on a permanent basis.
Businesses can download copies of Cycling to Work from our Work section. For more information and advice for businesses on travelling to work please Contact us

York Cycle Challenge success

After three weeks of fierce competition, 54 teams representing major employers across York have successfully completed the York Cycle Challenge.
The combined efforts of the hundreds of people who commuted by bike during the challenge period prevented 20,201 kilograms of CO2 from being released into the environment – enough to fill more than four million balloons!
What’s more, York thrashed Cambridge in an exciting battle between two of the UK’s most prominent cycling cities by persuading the most new cyclists to take part in the challenge. York attracted 134 compared to Cambridge’s 111.
Teams from businesses, schools, colleges and other York-based organisations competed in six different categories based on their size. The overall winners of each category are as follows:

500+ staff – The industrial division at Shepherd Group
200-499 staff – The University of York’s biology department
50-199 staff – The Environment Agency
20-49 staff – The Stockholm Environment Institute at The University of York
7-19 staff – The Environment Agency
3-6 staff – The ILT department at York College

Graham Titchener, programme manager for Cycling City York, said: “I am absolutely thrilled that the York Cycle Challenge was so well received by the employers of York; it’s fantastic that so many large organisations chose to be a part of it.
“On behalf of the Cycling City York team, I’d like to say well done and thank you to everyone who logged their journeys on the challenge website, and congratulations to the many prizes winners. By cycling to and from work, people are helping to make York a cleaner, greener and safer city for everyone. It’s also really pleasing that York was victorious in the battle to see which of the cycling cities could attract the most new cyclists to take part.
“I think that the York Cycle Challenge was a fitting finale to the three-year Cycling City York programme. It has also helped to cement York’s reputation as one of the UK’s most cycle friendly cities, and confirms its status as a national leader when it comes to championing cycling and other forms of sustainable transport.”
The York Cycle Challenge was organised in conjunction with CTC Challenge for Change; a partnership between the CTC’s Charitable Trust and Challenge for Change. Challenge for Change is a social marketing agency specialising in developing behavioural change programmes that get more people cycling more often.

Challenge cyclists burn off the equivalent of more than 15,000 chocolate bars

As the York Cycle Challenge enters its final week, those taking part have burned off the calorie equivalent of almost 15,000 bars of chocolate.*
Hundreds of people working at businesses, schools, colleges and other organisations across the city are taking part in the biggest city-wide cycle challenge ever to be organised by Cycling City York.
So far, 52 organisations have logged details of journeys made by bike on the challenge website; 1,120 individuals working for the organisations taking part have logged journeys, including 86 people who hadn't cycled in more than a year before signing up to the challenge; 8,356 individual cycle trips have been logged; 85,110 miles have been cycled; 6.9 million kilo joules of energy have been burnt – the equivalent of 468 pounds of fat; 7,188 of the trips made were for the purpose of getting from A to B (rather than cycling for leisure) and if they’d been made by car instead 13,156 kilograms of CO2 would have been emitted into the atmosphere.
Teams are competing in six categories, according to their size. The following organisations are currently leading in their respective categories:

500+ staff - Shepherd Group
200-499 staff - Biology Department, University of York
50-199 staff - Environment Agency
20-49 staff - Transport Planning Unit, City of York Council
7-19 staff - RedBlack Software Ltd
3-6 staff – Sustrans

The fact that York has managed to attract so many people who are new to cycling to take part in the challenge means that the city has extended its early lead in the York versus Cambridge element of the competition. At the beginning of this final week, York had managed to attract 86 new cyclists to take part compared Cambridge’s 54.
Graham Titchener, programme manager for Cycling City York, said: “As we enter the last few days of the challenge, we want to see everyone giving it a final push to ensure that York comes out on top in the battle of the Cycling Cities.
“At a local level, competition in some of the categories is particularly fierce so the current leaders will have to stay on their toes if they still want to be in pole position when the challenge ends on Sunday.”
The York Cycle Challenge has been organised in conjunction with CTC Challenge for Change; a partnership between the CTC’s Charitable Trust and Challenge for Change. Challenge for Change is a social marketing agency specialising in developing behavioural change programmes that get more people cycling more often.
