School events
We’re working with schools on a range of projects aimed at encouraging pupils to cycle to and from school, and also for leisure.
This section contains a few examples, but to find out more about future events, please contact us.
Biking Vikings
In June 2009, over a hundred primary school children from four schools in York joined forces to promote cycling. They ventured into York's city centre on two wheels, accompanied by some scary looking Viking escorts! A prize was awarded for the best viking costume.
Beauty and the Bike
More than 140 York school girls are pedal ready and raring to go after taking part in the Beauty and the Bike project.
Groups of girls from primary and secondary schools across the city benefited from the project. Those taking part enjoyed bike maintenance classes; the chance to design fashionable cycle wear; cycle training; natural beauty sessions with high street retailer Lush; and guided bike rides along York's cycle path network into the city centre.
Positive comments from the girls who took part, who are all aged between ten and 13 years, included "it's the best thing we have ever done - we should do it every week", "cycling makes me really happy", and "before, we used to go everywhere in the car - now my whole family are going to come out cycling".
