Schools and colleges

School travel plans help to reduce the effects of the 'school run' on congestion and pollution.

  • They are an individual school strategy designed to reduce car use on the journey from home to school.
  • They encourage walking and cycling as a way of improving children's health and fitness.
  • They raise awareness of sustainable transport choices through teaching in the curriculum.
  • The whole school community needs to be involved in writing a travel plan as it will be a living document for years to come.

One of the best ways to reduce congestion and car dependence at your school or college is to encourage pupils/students and staff to cycle. Relatively inexpensive schemes such as cycle parking or improved pedestrian access can be put in place to support these objectives.

Pupils Cycling Young people aged between 11 and 15 are most vulnerable on the roads, and, nationally, only one third of children ever take part in cycle training.

It's important that all young people, whatever their age, know the basics of road safety and have some proper training before they set out.

Working with us

We want to train and encourage more young people than ever before to cycle to school or college. Our aim is to reduce congestion, improve the health and fitness of children, and give young people a valuable skill for life. Our target is to double the number of children cycling to school from eight per cent to 16 per cent by 2010. To do this, we will be funding more training initiatives, employing more cycle trainers and running promotional events for schools as well as developing Schools’ travel plans.
