Arriving by bike
York is well served by road and rail. National Cycle Network route 65 passes close to York Racecourse, which is also signposted from the A64 bypass.
Trains operated by East Coast, Cross Country, Grand Central, Transpennine Express and Northern Rail call at York station. All of these services are able to carry bikes.
You can also bring your bike into the UK by Eurostar. Bike space can be reserved on the same train that you travel on, for a £20 fee. In London, trains arrive at St. Pancras International station. This is directly adjacent to Kings Cross station, where trains depart to York.
P&O Ferries sail between Rotterdam and Hull. National cycle route 66 from the docks connects in Hull with route 65 to Selby and York.
Routes pass through the heart of the city and along the River Ouse, giving access to some of the city's most attractive landmarks, and extending out into the surrounding countryside.
Travelling out of the city centre, the Millennium Bridge - built for cyclists and pedestrians - links important routes on both sides of the River Ouse. The Solar System route runs south of the city towards Selby.
York is linked to several regional and national cycle networks including:
- The Trans Pennine Trail - a coast to coast route linking several major towns and cities in the North of England.
- The Sustrans National Cycle Network routes 65 and 66 pass through the city, linking urban and rural destinations.
- The North Sea Cycle Route passes through the city. The impressive 6000km route links Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK.
