Teenagers
We’re working with young people on a range of projects aimed at encouraging them to cycle to and from school or college, and in their leisure time.
This section contains a few examples, but to find out more about future events, please contact us.
Bike Club
We’re encouraging local groups to apply for Bike Club grants, which are available to fund cycling-related activities for ten to 20 year olds.
Bike Club is a national, joint initiative led by ContinYou, UK Youth and CTC (the national cyclists’ organisation). It aims to encourage young people to use cycling as a means of transport; make cycling an important part of young people’s lives; and help children and young people to discover the freedom that cycling brings.
The York area has its own Bike Club officer, Patrick Carr, who is available to work with local groups and organisations to develop Bike Clubs for young people.
Application forms for the Bike Club grants of upto £2,000 are available from the website at www.bikeclub.org.uk/resources where you will also find lots more information explaining how Bike Club works and the type of activities it can help with.
You can also contact Patrick for more information about setting up a Bike Club by telephoning 07825 854731.
Ebor Bikum
A new two-part Road Safety Cycling Course -Ebor-BIKE-um - was launched in 2008. Funded by the Department for Transport Road Safety Grant, the course is aimed at young people aged between 14 and 18 years of age who use their bikes as regular transport.
The course intends to help young people by giving them the information to make informed decisions for themselves. Cycling is one of the main ways that teenagers get around the city and it's vital that they know how to do it safely.
All the young people who successfully attend both sessions of the course will receive a free set of bike lights as a practical way of helping them to become a safer cyclist.
Anyone who runs a youth group and is interested in receiving the sessions should contact us.
Momentum on 2 Wheels
We have provided five bicycles to City of York Council’s Young People’s Services team for use in this special project aimed at teenagers who have been, or are at risk of being, excluded from school.
The Momentum Project is aimed at young people over the age of 14 and is a way of engaging them in practical activities that provide them with an opportunity to pick up useful skills and work alongside others as part of a team.
It is delivered through a series of weekly two-hour sessions, covering everything from bicycle maintenance to short cycle rides aimed at raising their awareness of road safety, the health benefits of cycling and the need to maintain their bicycle properly.
